Origin of satay sauce
Satay sauce originated in Indonesia, where it is traditionally served with satay: grilled pieces of meat on a skewer. During the colonial period, the Dutch brought this flavorful sauce back to the Netherlands, where it quickly became popular. The Indonesian cuisine, with its rich and spicy flavors, made a lasting impression on Dutch culinary culture, and satay sauce became one of the most beloved influences.
Basic recipe
How do you make satay sauce yourself and what variations can you apply? Although there are many ready-made satay sauces and spice mixes available in stores, many people prefer to make their own version at home. This allows the flavor to be adjusted to personal preference, for example by adding more or less sambal, or by using extra spices like ginger or lemongrass.
The base of satay sauce is peanut butter, but the flavorings and spices added to it give it its characteristic taste. A standard recipe usually includes the following ingredients:

Ingredients
- 4 tablespoons peanut butter (preferably without added sugar)
- 200 ml coconut milk
- 1 tablespoon ketjap manis
- 1 teaspoon Sambal Oelek (or more to taste)
- 1 clove garlic, finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon lime juice
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
Preparation
- Heat the coconut milk in a pan over medium heat.
- Add the peanut butter and stir until it is completely dissolved in the coconut milk.
- Add the ketjap manis, Sambal Oelek, garlic, lime juice, and brown sugar.
- Keep stirring until all ingredients are well mixed and the sauce has reached the desired thickness.
- Taste and adjust the flavor with extra ketjap manis or sambal if necessary.
